Information Index
This page is a central location for site information other than searches
and our "mission statement". There are three
categories:
In general, we've tried to emphasize "official" sources of information.
That doesn't necessarily mean that we think it's always the best, or that
other sources can't be valuable. In most cases, however, the official sources
will be based on records not available to others.
The Casualty Database and The Wall
- See our Database Information page, which
also has some information on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
- Our Links Page has information
about the Memorial also.
Finding More Information On Casualties
First of all, we do not have any information on individual casualties
other than what we've made available on the site. We are not
sitting on any secret archives or boxes of things we haven't done yet;
if we have it, we're letting you see it.
- a casualty's Individual Deceased Personnel File
(IDPF) can furnish certain types of information not contained in the list.
We have sources for Army and Marine Corps IDPFs at this time.
- if you are a next-of-kin (usually defined as an immediate family member,
but possibly extending to cousins, aunts/uncles/nieces/nephews in some
situations, you can get a copy of the individual's military records from
the Military Personnel Record Center.
- While it is not actually more information, family and friends of
casualties listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are eligible for a
Presidential Memorial Certificate
from the Veterans Administration, in commemoration of the casualty's service.
- You may wish to try more traditional research methods, such as looking
for newspaper obituaries, veterans organizations, and the like. "Traditional"
methods are more labor-intensive and time-consuming than the Web, and are
not guaranteed to yield anything. On the other hand, we guarantee you that
not all knowledge in the world has been put up on the Web yet. :-)
Finding Living People
In general, we can't be of much help with searches for individual
veterans but we have a section for this in
our
Links page.
General Sources
- Our Links page will take you to some of
the main sources of related information. Many of the sources on this page
are repeated there.
- Some print sources of information can
be found here. This includes two ways of getting a printed copy of
the casualty names.
